Charles Samuel Pettitt was born in Woodditton (Newmarket Q2-1882 3B:522b), son of David Nelson and Sarah Ann PETTITT (née SWANN).
1891 census...Aged 9, he was at Park Cottages, Woodditton with his father David Nelson PETTITT [30] an agricultural labourer; his mother Sarah Ann [31]; sister May L. [10], brothers Richard [7], David N. [4] and Stephen [5 months]. They were all born in Woodditton. 1901 census...Possibly he is aged 18 at Bury St Edmunds in the Suffolk Regiment. His parents, brothers Richard, David, Luke [7], Stephen [5] and Claude [2] were at 97 Church Cottages, Woodditton, all recorded as born in Woodditton. It seems a baby Stephen has died and the next son was also named Stephen. 1911 census... Aged 29 (now recorded as Samuel) he was a farm labourer,living at 97 Church Cottages, Woodditton with his parents; brothers David Nelson (shepherd) and Claude, and sister Daisy [7] born in Woodditton. He married Ellen (Nellie) SMITH in Newmarket in Q2-1911. She was later living in 54 Saxon Street according to CWGC. From the pension card, they had three children, Doris HelenAmela (born 3-4-1912, George Arthur Steven (15-7-1915) and Grace Olive Muriel (5-5-1918) He was one of three brothers to die during the Great War. He enlisted in Leicester. As he died of his wounds and his service records are have not been found it is impossible to say exactly where or when he was wounded. Being in the Labour Corps makes it even more difficult to find where his unit was even. |
